Camels set for fame after media hype

26 Mar, 2008 12:58 PM
The Cobar Camels rugby club is about to receive some more unexpected publicity for its 50- year jubilee celebrations.

After featuring on a recent Fox Sports Inside Rugby program, the Camels will host a visit this week from Sydney’s Daily Telegraph which is seeking the hardest, toughest football club in Australia.

Club president Jarrod Marsden says a sport’s journalist from the newspaper will arrive in Cobar on Thursday to meet players and attend a training session at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Oval.

“It seems the Camels’ 50-year jubilee has snowballed to incredible proportions on top of a story on Fox Sports Inside Rugby program,” Jarrod said.

“Chico Harlan, a journalist with the Daily Telegraph, has been doing extensive research to find the hardest/toughest football club in Australia (league, union or AFL) which has led him to the Cobar Camels.

“Chico will be in Cobar this Thursday (for the Joker draw) and Friday (team training) and will then travel with the Camels to their first hit-out for the year which is a round-robin style day in Dubbo playing the Roos, Walgett and Coonamble.

“I suppose it’s no secret - hard rock mining and hard country farming breeds hard footballers.”
