Tough first round game for Roosters

03 Feb, 2010 04:00 PM
This season’s Group 11 rugby league competition kicks off on May 9 with the re-formed Cobar Roosters facing a tough opening round match at Tom Knight Oval against 2009 grand finalists Parkes.

The Nyngan Tigers host the Wellington Cowboys, Forbes Magpies are at home to Narromine while Dubbo rivals Macquarie and CYMS clash at Apex Oval.

Round two on May 16 has the Cole Jermyn-led Roosters travelling to Narromine’s Cale Oval with another away game against Dubbo Macquarie scheduled for round three (May 25).

Round four (May 30) features the intertown clash between traditional archrivals Nyngan and Cobar with the Roosters having the home ground advantage.

In round five (June 6) Cobar travels to Forbes to take on the Magpies.

Round six is the home match against the Wellington Cowboys while Dubbo CYMS host the Roosters in round seven.

Captain-coach Cole Jermyn will have plenty of opportunities to blend his new first grade squad with pre-season matches scheduled against Group 14 clubs Gilgandra and Coonamble.

Cobar will play Gilgandra during the weekend of April 10-11 with the Coonamble-Cobar clash scheduled for the weekend of April 17-18.

Meanwhile Saturday May 1 has been scheduled for the opening round of 2010 Western Plains Rugby Union.

The Natava Tagi-led Cobar Camels travel to Warren’s Victoria Oval for their round one clash with the struggling Pumas.

Ailsa Fitzsimmons Oval is the venue for the round two match between the Camels and 2009 premiers, the Coonamble Rams.

Due to uncertainty regarding the Nyngan Bulls’ ability to field a first grade side, Cobar’s round three match at Larkin Oval may only involve the Camels’ 2nd XV.

In round four the Camels are at home to Gular then face consecutive away matches at Walgett, Bourke and Brewarrina.

As part of their pre-season build-up, the Camels plan to compete in the Cowra 10s on March 6, the Dubbo 10s on March 13 and a full- strength trial against Dubbo Rhinos on March 27.

The Murray Robotham and Paul Gauci-coached Cobar Blues commence their 2010 Northern Riverina League Aussie Rules season on April 17 with a tough away game against the Hillston ‘Swans’.

Another vigorous contest is likely in round two on April 24 when the Blues host a visit from West Wyalong-Girral.

The Blues have a round three bye before making the long round four road trip to Barellan on May 5.

In round five Cobar are at home to Ungarie while the final two opening rounds (May 22 and 29) of the seven-team competition schedule away games at Tullibigeal and Lake Cargelligo.

Aussie Rules training commenced in heatwave conditions three weeks ago with the club utilising both Ward Oval and the town’s swimming pool for pre-season workouts.

Their female counterparts, the premiership-winning Blues netballers begin their 2010 training schedule this week.
