RSL too strong against Ox Colts

18 Nov, 2009 03:12 PM
RSL Club played Ox Colts in another day/night match on the turf wicket at Ward Oval last Saturday with RSL captain Glen Spinks winning the toss and having no hesitation in batting first in the hot conditions and with only 10 players.

Glen and Clay Neale opened the innings with a solid partnership of 41 before Neale was dismissed for 27.

The loss of two quick wickets brought the in-form Paul Gauci and Wade Potter to the crease and they took the score from 3 for 44 to 86 when Potter was out for a well compiled 25.

He was quickly followed 2 runs later when Gauci was dismissed for 18 and the score at 5 for 88.

The remaining RSL batsmen, all juniors, took the score to a very competitive total of 9 for 153 with Travis Dunlevy top scoring with 30.

Main wicket takers for Ox Colts were Mal Hillier with 2 for 16 from 7 overs and David Watson 2 for 34 from 10 overs.

Other wicket takers were Stewart Fraser 1 for 15, Craig Tanke 1 for 42, Jayde Townsend 1 for 9 and Stephen Nicholson 1 for 13.

Ox Colts commenced their innings under lights and with the first four batsmen, Dan Howard 10, Mal Hillier 22, Greg Brown 27 and Stewart Fraser 18, all making double figures looked like setting up a victory.

However with the dismissal of Fraser, Stephen Nicholson and David Watson the score had slumped to 6 for 94 still requiring 60 runs to win. Craig Tanke who top scored in the match with 32 batted with the tail enders however the Ox Colts ended with a total of 132 and giving RSL Club their first win of the season by 21 runs.

Best bowling figures for RSL Club were veteran Geoff Potter with 3 for 12 from 9 overs. Other wicket takers were the spin twins of Glen Spinks 2 for 19 and Clay Neale 2 for 30, Wade Potter also took 1 for 24 and Shane Munro 1 for 26.

Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 travelled out to Nymagee for a top-of-the-competition-table clash. They took 13 players and needed every one of them as Nymagee won the toss and batted first compiling the massive total of 7 for 329 from their 50 overs.

Seven of the eight Nymagee batsmen made scores of 23 or more with Phil Harley top scoring with 84.

He was supported by Jade Buckman 48, Doug North 43, Chris Barnett 36 not out, Matt Nicholson 29, David Betts 27 and Roger Mitchell 23.

Wicket takers for Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 were Wade McLachlan 1 for 36, Bill Behsman 1 for 40, Damien Harbison 1 for 50 and D. McGrath 1 for 50.

However Justin Richardson should be mentioned for his spell of bowling. Although not taking a wicket he had only 29 runs scored from his 10 overs at a run rate of less than 3 per over when Nymagee’s total team score was a run rate of 6.6 runs per over.

Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 went in to bat obviously sapped of some energy after chasing so many runs in the field and this showed in their batting with the team being dismissed for only 51 in 15 overs. Bill Behsman was the only batsman to make double figures top scoring with 15.

Brilliant fielding and catching by Nymagee did not help Atlas’ cause.

Phil Harley was the standout bowler taking 6 for 16 from 6 overs, which are the best figures by any bowler so far this season. Other wicket takers were Travis Buckman 3 for 10 and Mitch Shields 1 for 4.

Next week’s matches have Golf Club playing RSL Club on No: 2 and Ox Colts taking on Nymagee in a day/night match on the turf wicket at Ward Oval.

Players in the day/night match did not take much notice of last week’s request and are again urged to be at the ground by 4pm so that the match can be completed by a decent time of night.
