RSL and Ox Colts take victories

03 Feb, 2010 04:04 PM
The local 50 over a side senior cricket competition resumed after the Christmas break last Saturday with RSL Club taking on Golf Club in a scheduled day-night match on the turf at Ward Oval and Ox Colts travelling out to Nymagee.

The match in town however did not require the use of the lights as it was finished after only 29 overs.

Golf Club batted first and were all out for 48 from 21 overs. Sundries was the top score for Golf Club with 11 and Matt Crotty was the only batsman to reach double figures scoring 10 runs. Next best was young Jesse Brennan with 9.

RSL Club’s strong bowling attack was again very effective with young opening bowlers Wade Potter 3 for 12 from 6 overs and Shane Munro 3 for 23 from 6 overs making the initial breakthroughs and followed up by wily veterans Glenn Spinks 3 for 7 from 5 overs and Geoff Potter 1 for 5 from 4 overs who cleaned up the tail- enders.

RSL’s opening batsman Peter Neale with 20 not out and Clay Neale 19 not out made short work of reaching their target in only 8 overs with RSL finishing at 51 without the loss of a wicket.

The other match out at Nymagee was quite the opposite to the match in town with 92 overs bowled in the day and a massive 576 runs scored, thankfully the players did not have to cope with excessive hot weather conditions.

Ox Colts batted first amassing the huge total of 7 for 312 from their 50 overs.

Captain Stewart Fraser with a welcome return to form, top scored with 124 and was ably supported by Stephen Nicholson with 56, Tom Good with 46 and Dan Howard with 18.

Wicket takers for Nymagee were Chris Gilbert who took 2 for 15, John Potter 2 for 51, Wade Smith 1 for 19 and Mitch Shields 1 for 50.

Nymagee began the huge run chase disastrously losing key opening batsmen Jade Buckman for 4 and Craig Dillon for 13.

Matt Nicholson 58, Roger Mitchell 22 and Ben McBride 21 together with a great innings from Chris Gilbert who scored his first century in the senior cricket competition remaining not out on 114 (well done Gilbo), was not enough to see Nymagee through to a victory and they were eventually all out for 264 from 42 overs, 49 short of the required target.

In a great all-round performance Stewart Fraser was the best of the Ox Colts bowlers with the impressive figures of 3 for 21 from his 10 overs. To bowl at a rate of 2 runs per over out at Nymagee is a great achievement.

Other wicket takers for Ox Colts were Mal Hillier with 2 for 34, David Watson 2 for 80 and Tom Good 1 for 66.

Next week’s matches have Golf Club playing Atlas Copco / Golfy 2 on the turf wicket and RSL Club taking on Nymagee on No: 2 Oval with both matches commencing at 12.30 pm.
