Minor premiers close to fifth cup

03 Mar, 2010 01:35 PM
Minor Premiers Nymagee have a chance to win their fifth consecutive Cobar District Cricket Association Premiership after defeating Atlas Copco/Golfy (II) in the major semi-final last Saturday.

Both teams were missing players due to other commitments (weddings, football trials and injuries) with Atlas Copco only able to field ten players and Nymagee not having their eleventh player until the first drinks break at 17 overs.

Atlas Copco captain Jake Harbison won the toss and batted first however they were soon in trouble, losing in-form opening batsman Bill Behsman for a duck.

Jake Harbison and Robbie Mitchell were both dismissed for 11 runs and it was left to Damien Harbison to try to set Nymagee a reasonable target to chase.

When Damien was dismissed for a well compiled top score of 35, the remaining batsman offered little resistance to the good line and length bowling from the Nymagee bowlers and were all out for a total of 89.

Travis Buckman was the leading wicket taker with four from 25 and he was well supported by Phil Harley and Craig Dillon who both had the same economical figures of two for 17 from 10 overs.

John Potter also bowled tightly taking one for 16 from nine overs (12 of the 16 runs from his bowling were wides).

Although requiring only 90 runs for victory, the Nymagee batsmen knew it would still be a tough run chase with their under-strength batting line up (missing top line batsman in Doug North and Jade Buckman) and the thick grass surface of the playing field.

Atlas Copco had their chance to put a great deal of pressure on the Nymagee batsmen when they dismissed opening batsman Chris Gilbert for a ‘golden duck’ and also dropped two catches given by this season’s leading batsman Phil Harley.

The experience of Harley and Craig Dillon saw them through the early overs to post a comfortable victory without the loss of any further wickets and Dillon remaining not out on 42 and Harley not out for 36. Jake Harbison was the only wicket taker with one for 16.
