A weekend of entertainment, official ceremonies, camping out, special children’s activities and exercise is scheduled for May 3 and 4 at Cobar’s major event venue, Ward Oval.

Cobar Shire Council has announced its support for Relay for Life which raises funds for the NSW Cancer Council.

Chairperson of the organising committee, mayor Lilliane Brady said the event had the potential to make a difference to the lives of local people diagnosed with cancer.

“Cancer is a disease that affects so many people in our community and we are proud to do our bit to reduce its impact,” she said.

“The official launch and sausage sizzle will be held this Saturday at the Burgess IGA carpark from 10.30am.

“Information brochures and registration packs, which includes a T-shirt, will also be available at $11 for early bird sign-ons.”

A survivors’ information evening, organised by Deb Parisi, Karen Irvine and Elaine Walsh will be held at the Memorial Services Club next Wednesday from 6.30pm with drinks and nibbles supplied.

All cancer survivors are encouraged to attend and learn more about the Relay for Life and their participation in the special opening and closing ceremonies.

Teams from sporting organisations, volunteer groups, friends, families, schools and businesses can register at the Saturday launch.

Relay for Life, Lilliane said, is an overnight family-friendly event where people form teams of 10 to 15 and walk around the local oval to raise funds to help defeat cancer.

“There is a real festival atmosphere with teams camping overnight and raising money with all sorts of interesting ideas.”
