Cobar Primary Health Care has attracted Dr Ruben Edyp to its busy centre bringing a second permanent GP to join Dr Trevor Smith, Dr Ram Sharma and Dr Deon Heyns.
Coming to Australia from Bulgaria in1987 as a political refugee, Dr Edyp was offered placement at the University of NSW in 1989.
He has also worked in China and America before spending the last eight years in Australia specialising in skin cancers.
“Awareness (of skin cancer) is important,” Dr Edyp said last Monday during his first day at the Centre.
“Skin cancers need to be treated before they become chronic and its important to have a check-up.
“What people think are just a mole, may in fact be a melonoma, and can be treated at the clinic.”
Dr Edyp said it was important to educate residents on skin care and that he can provide a paper or powerpoint presentation on the importance of prevention.
“With less knowledge about skin care people are at a higher risk of getting skin cancer.”
Moving from the Gold Coast, he started at the Primary Health Care centre last Monday, and has already taken a liking to walking about the Newey Reserve and seeing the wildlife.
He lists swimming as his favourite hobby.
