Aussie pride on line as local hits road for Kidney Kar Rally

15 Jul, 2009 04:15 PM
Army Reservist, rally car enthusiast and Cobar police officer, Senior Constable Greg Martin, will hit the road again in this year’s three- state Kidney Kar Rally in a re-vamped 1963 EJ Holden appropriately named ‘Aussie Pride’.

The 2009 rally, which starts in Tasmania’s northern city of Launceston on August 15 and finishes eight days later at Muswellbrook in NSW after crossing the Bass Strait to Victoria by car ferry, will be Senior Constable Martin’s third Kidney Kar adventure.

Two years ago, accompanied by several Army Reserve mates, he competed in the Darwin to Dubbo rally which overnighted in Cobar.

Last year’s fundraiser rally took Senior Constable Martin and his mates on a cross-country course from Sydney to Mudgee in central NSW via Mildura in Victoria.

Senior Constable Martin said Kidney Kar rallies were a wonderful fundraiser for a great cause.

“It’s a great cause and I am proud to be involved, particularly after my sons were diagnosed early with kidney problems as babies,” he said.

“It’s good to see there are a number of families who raise money for the cause and go on the trip each year.

“There are two ways to take part in a Kidney Kar Rally - join the rally proper which is done

on a time trial, or come along behind the rally cars.

“This year my wife and sons will be along in support.”

Fundraising to support kidney research is the main aim of the rally with entry fees covering the cost of accommodation and meals, and each official vehicle being involved in collecting tax- deductable donations.

“Kar 9 ‘Aussie Pride’ is currently leading in the fundraising event so we are in the pole position - all donations are very welcome,” Senior Constable Martin said.

“If donating, please make cheques out to Kar 9, care of the Cobar police station.”
