Soccer prize goes down to the wire

05 Nov, 2009 09:50 AM
M & C Parisi Floorboards booked their spot in the mixed indoor soccer grand final after defeating Redbacks 6-2 last Wednesday night.

The Floorboards will now face Sonic for the major prize with the game starting at 6.30pm.

Floorboards took the lead thanks to an own goal from Redbacks’ Peter Neale.

Neale made amends for his early mistake to level the scores with a long-range goal.

They went into half-time leading 2-1 when Rob Childs scored before the break.

Two second-half goals from Jade Buckman extended Floorboards’ lead to 4-1 and the game seemed in the bag.

When Baden Smith scored one of the goals of the season for Redbacks, the game went to another level as Redbacks came charging back.

However, with three minutes left on the clock, Floorboards put the final nail in the coffin when Zoe Harland scored from close range.

The mixed indoor soccer grand final will be decided tonight between Sonic and Floorboards.

Sonic were first into the grand final after defeating Floorboards in the semi-finals.

Sonic finished the regular season in third position.

They won nine out of the 15 games, scoring 74 (4.9 per game) goals and conceding 66 (4.4 per game) goals.

They attack in numbers, leaving themselves vulnerable to counter attacks.

However, they’re a young, fit team which switches from attack to defence with ease.

Although it will take a team effort to win, Wade Potter will be the danger man for Floorboards. Wade is the Sonics’ top scorer with 18 this season.

Floorboards booked their spot in the final dance after defeating Redbacks. Floorboards finished as the minor premiers. They won 13 out of the 15 games, scoring 124 (8.3 per game) goals and conceding (2.6 per game) goals.

Floorboards count heavily on their defence and female goals (worth two points) to win matches.

They are the only team in the competition where the female players have out-scored the male players. They will look to counter attack at every available opportunity.

Floorboards and Sonics have met on four occasions this season. The honours are split with two wins apiece.

The stats would put Floorboards as slight favourites but I believe it is an even-money bet.
