Volunteers from Cobar are giving local residents the opportunity to go behind the scenes of the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), during its annual open day.
This year’s RFS Open Day will be on Saturday October 24 in Drummond Park from 10am to 1pm, during the Festival of the Miner’s Ghost markets.
Community safety officer for the far west team, Inspector Ian Maidens, said the open day was a fun and informative day.
Cobar HQ Brigade has planned a day of activities and demonstrations.
“The open day gives people a chance to learn more about the RFS and the important work our volunteers do, whether it be firefighting or helping people at accidents or with storm damage,” he said.
“And for the kids, it’s always an enjoyable day, climbing over the fire trucks.”
Inspector Ian Maidens said the open day also served a serious side, providing both children and adults with important fire safety advice.
“Our volunteers will be on hand to help people prepare for bushfire season, giving practical tips and advice on fire safety,” he said.
“It’s never too early to get your home ready for fires and you’re never too young to learn about fire safety.
“We hope to educate as many people as possible at the open day and show how rewarding it is, being a volunteer.”
