More than 100 guests, visiting and local business people attended last Saturday’s 2009 Orana Regional Business Excellence Awards at Cobar Bowling and Golf Club’s new auditorium.
Mineral samples from Cobar’s three mines were showcased at the function while colourful scenes from the local area were screened throughout the evening.
Special guests at the presentation hosted by Dugald Saunders (ABC Radio) were Darren Smith (Telstra Countrywide), Peter Halliwell (Country Energy), John Walkam (Orana Regional Development) and Michael Cox (Cobar Business Association).
Cobar’s mayor Lilliane Brady welcomed the region’s many business visitors and wished all finalists a successful evening.
The Most Outstanding Business Award went to Edgerton Nursery of Narromine while the Tourism, Recreation/Hospitality Award was shared by Wine Glass Bar and Grill, Mudgee, and the Gulargambone Caravan Park.
Muddy Waters Coffee Shop at Brewarrina received the New Business Award with Narromine’s Central West Surveying and Civil Pty Ltd gaining the Manufacturing, Construction and Trades Prize.
Award-winning businesses from Cobar included Stationery Essentials, Red Earth Real Estate and Cobar Public School while Quilt Shop and Bizzy Bee’s received Highly Commended framed certificates.
Regional manager of major sponsor Telstra, Darren Smith, described operating a small business in regional NSW as a challenging task.
“Telstra Countrywide has been a proud sponsor of the Orana Regional Business Excellence Awards recognising the importance of working actively in the business community.” he said.
“Operating a small business is a challenging task and for that I applaud your perseverance, commitment and an unwavering vision to succeed.”
Facilitated by Regional Development Australia Orana, the awards program has spanned six months and covers local government areas of Brewarrina, Bourke, Cobar, Coonamble, Mid-Western Regional, Narromine and Warrumbungle.
“The awards are a valuable program that celebrates the commitment our communities have in sustaining the Orana region,” John Walkom, chair of Regional Development Australia Orana, said.
“These businesses and community organisations have a number of essential ingredients that make them successful including their passion and enthusiasm for what they do, the services they provide and their innovative and
committed approach not only to their business, but the community that surrounds them,” Mr Walkom said.
“It’s businesses like these that keep the social fabric of our communities thriving.”
